The unfolding political rapprochement between President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has taken a significant step forward, with ODM securing key positions in powerful Parliamentary committees. The reconstitution of House departmental committees has seen the opposition party clinch critical roles previously held by Kenya Kwanza lawmakers, signaling a deepening of the ODM-UDA deal.
A major highlight of this realignment is the Budget and Appropriation Committee, one of the most influential committees in Parliament. Previously chaired by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, the committee is now set to be led by Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi. This shift marks a strategic win for ODM, granting the party a crucial role in the country’s financial planning and budgetary oversight.
Another significant change is in the Health Committee, which was formerly under the leadership of Endebes MP Dr. Robert Pukose. The chairmanship now moves to ODM, with Seme MP Dr. James Nyikal expected to take charge. This move aligns with ODM’s longstanding advocacy for healthcare reforms and increased funding for public health services.
In addition to these top committees, ODM has also gained control of the Labour Committee, with Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga poised to take over. Nominated MP Irene Mayaka from Nyamira is expected to chair the Regional Integration Committee, further strengthening ODM’s influence in legislative processes.
Beyond chairmanship positions, ODM has also secured vice-chair slots in vital committees such as Lands and Education, ensuring the party’s presence in key legislative discussions. The opposition has also maintained control over the critical oversight roles, with Butere MP Tindi Scott Mwale set to chair the powerful Public Accounts Committee (PAC). Additionally, Kakamega’s Jack Wamboka and Bungoma’s Emmanuel Wangwe will chair the Public Investments Committees on Governance and Social Services, respectively.
Meanwhile, President Ruto is set to convene a Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary Group meeting at State House, Nairobi, on Friday. The meeting will deliberate on the reconstitution of committees and the broader implications of the ODM-UDA arrangement. As this political realignment unfolds, it is clear that ODM is positioning itself as a formidable player within the legislative landscape, reshaping the dynamics of power in Parliament.
