Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is set to hold a key meeting in Kwale County on Tuesday as part of his ongoing consultations with Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) delegates and party officials. The sessions, which have seen him traverse several counties, are aimed at solidifying his political base and strategizing for the future.
Since his unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, Raila has been actively engaging with party members and supporters. His recent meetings in Kisumu, Siaya, Migori, Homa Bay, Busia, and Kilifi have sparked speculation that he is preparing for a major political move, possibly involving a partnership with President William Ruto.
Raila temporarily relinquished ODM’s leadership to Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o in October 2024 to focus on his AUC campaign. However, with that chapter now closed, he is reclaiming his position and reinforcing his influence within the party. His renewed engagements suggest that he is gearing up for a strategic decision that could redefine his political trajectory.
ODM confirmed his visit to Kwale through an official statement on X, saying, “After successful consultations with the people of Mombasa and Kilifi on the way forward for Kenya, today (March 4, 2025), we head to Kwale County to listen to the views of the people of this great county.”
Reports indicate that Raila may soon sign a formal agreement with President Ruto, which could pave the way for collaboration between ODM and the Kenya Kwanza government. However, this move is seen as a double-edged sword, with some supporters urging him to embrace the alliance while others caution against aligning with the ruling administration.
Political analysts suggest that Raila faces a significant dilemma whether to work with the government or maintain his role as the opposition leader. Roots Party leader George Wajackoya has weighed in, advising Raila to expand his consultations beyond ODM and engage with leaders from different political factions.
“Consult other political leaders don’t assume that you and ODM know it all,” Wajackoya remarked during an interview with Spice FM, urging Raila to consider a broader spectrum of opinions before making his next move.
As Raila continues his engagements, the political landscape remains uncertain, with Kenyans keenly watching his next steps.
