ODM leader Raila Odinga captivated Muslim faithful during an Iftar gathering on Wednesday night in Nairobi, where he expressed his deep understanding of Islam and the Quran. Addressing the attendees, Raila confidently stated that he had read the entire Quran and comprehended its teachings fully.
“Mimi nimesoma Quran kabisa kutoka Alif Lam Meem hadi Al-Baqarah, naelewa kabisa. Wale kafiri wengine hawaelewi,” Raila remarked, drawing cheers from the audience. His reference to “Alif Lam Meem,” the first verse of Surah Al-Baqarah, signified his familiarity with Islamic scripture. This verse also appears in other chapters, including Surah Al-Imran, Surah Al-Ankabut, Surah Ar-Rum, Surah Luqman, and Surah As-Sajda.
During his speech, Raila took the opportunity to educate non-Muslims present about the core tenets of Islam. He outlined the Five Pillars of Islam, emphasizing their significance.
“For those of us here who are not Muslims, the Islamic religion has five pillars. One of them is this of fasting (Sawm), but the first one is a declaration of faith that Allah (Shahada),” he explained.
He went on to mention the other pillars: Salah, the five daily prayers performed facing the Kaaba in Mecca; Zakat, the alms tax given to the poor and needy; and Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca that is obligatory for Muslims who are financially and physically able.
The event brought together various religious and political leaders, including Senate Speaker Amason Kingi. Raila has established a tradition of hosting Iftar gatherings annually, acknowledging the importance of Ramadan to the Muslim community.
“Iftar ni siku muhimu sana, maana tuko kwa mwezi mtukufu wa Ramadan,” he noted. Iftar is the evening meal that marks the end of the daily fast during Ramadan and holds great spiritual significance for Muslims.
Raila’s engagement with the Muslim community highlights his commitment to inclusivity and religious harmony in Kenya. His knowledge of the Quran and Islamic practices further strengthens his bond with Muslim supporters, making such gatherings a vital aspect of his outreach efforts.
