ODM leader Raila Odinga has turned down calls from some politicians urging him to rejoin the opposition, asserting his commitment to working with the government. Raila, who recently signed a pact with President William Ruto to address national challenges, reaffirmed his stance, stating, “We know where we are going.”
Speaking during a public event, the former Prime Minister questioned the motives of those encouraging him to shift alliances. He recalled past criticisms from the same quarters, where he was branded a “hyena,” insinuating opportunistic tendencies. However, Raila dismissed such narratives, emphasizing that his decision was guided by the country’s broader interests rather than political convenience.
“Kenya has come from far, where there were challenges, and there is a need for all leaders to unite to avoid sliding back,” Raila stated. He underscored the importance of national unity, urging leaders to focus on fostering stability rather than engaging in divisive politics.
His remarks come amid increasing calls, particularly from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his allies, for Raila to align with them. However, Raila remains steadfast in his decision, insisting that the country is bigger than any individual and that leaders must work together to defend it.
While acknowledging the existing challenges in the country, including the need for electoral reforms, Raila expressed optimism that such issues would be addressed over time. He urged Kenyans to be patient and to embrace a spirit of sacrifice for the nation’s progress.
“Before we reach there, we must all sacrifice. Where we are is not where we wanted to be, but the country must move forward. That is why we are saying let us unite,” he said.
Raila and Ruto’s recent agreement signals a shift in Kenya’s political landscape, fostering collaboration between former rivals in addressing governance issues. His firm rejection of the opposition’s invitation marks a continued commitment to working with the government, prioritizing stability over political rivalry.
As Kenya navigates complex socio-economic and political challenges, Raila’s stance underscores the evolving nature of political alliances and the urgent need for leaders to focus on national cohesion.
