Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has arrived in Kisii County for a crucial engagement with his supporters as he seeks a fresh political direction following his unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader is holding consultations with party delegates from Kisii and Nyamira counties at the Kisii Agricultural Training Centre.
This meeting comes after a similar session in Wajir on Wednesday, as Raila intensifies his outreach efforts to gauge public sentiment across his political strongholds. Kisii Governor Simba Arati, who also serves as an ODM deputy party leader, is leading local ODM members in the discussions. Arati emphasized the importance of the meeting, noting that it is part of a broader strategy to determine Raila’s next steps in national politics.
“We are meeting Baba for his round of consultations covering the entire Kisii region,” Arati stated. “These deliberations will play a key role in shaping his political future.”
Raila has been actively engaging with party members across various regions, including Luo Nyanza, parts of Western Kenya, and the Coast. His consultations are aimed at gathering grassroots opinions on whether he should continue leading the opposition or consider aligning with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration ahead of the 2027 elections.
After concluding his meetings in Kisii, Raila is expected to travel to Narok County, where he will meet delegates from the Maa community. Political analysts note that Raila faces a pivotal moment in his career, navigating limited options as he considers his next move. At 79 years old, he must decide whether to maintain his opposition stance or negotiate a political deal with the government.
During his Wajir visit on Wednesday, Raila was welcomed by Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, who also chairs the Council of Governors. Abdullahi acknowledged Raila’s mission, stating, “Welcomed the Right Honourable Raila Odinga to Wajir County as he engaged with the grassroots in his consultative mission.”
Speculation is rife that Raila could make a major political announcement before the end of the week. While in Kwale on Tuesday, he urged his supporters to remain patient as he finalizes his consultations. Kenyans keenly await his next move, which could redefine the country’s political landscape.
