Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has called on party members to engage in discussions about the party’s future with civility and mutual respect. His appeal comes amidst internal tensions following ODM’s decision to collaborate with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
In a statement delivered through his spokesperson Dennis Onyango, Raila emphasized the importance of maintaining “decorum, civility, restraint, and respect for one another” as the party navigates this critical moment. He warned against turning the internal discourse into personal attacks, reminding members that ODM has weathered many political storms and remains a pillar in Kenya’s multiparty democracy.
The internal debate was sparked by differing interpretations of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between ODM and UDA, which some members view as a betrayal of the party’s long-standing opposition stance. However, Raila downplayed fears that the MoU threatens ODM’s identity or future.
“Mr. Odinga believes the discussions are not unique to ODM and are in line with similar such engagements that have gone on in equally strong parties in established democracies,” Onyango noted.
Raila is reportedly closely following the conversations unfolding within the party and among the public, particularly those questioning the MoU and the nature of the relationship with the Kenya Kwanza administration. His stance is that the party’s direction will ultimately be determined by its relevant organs, once all perspectives are heard and harmonized.
“The Party Leader is confident that at the appropriate time, relevant organs of the party will harmonize the diverse views and come up with a unified position on the way forward,” Onyango said.
Raila assured ODM supporters that despite the ongoing discourse, the party remains united and committed to national development and the people’s interests. He reiterated that ODM will continue to play its role in strengthening Kenya’s democracy and urged members to focus on issues that uplift the nation rather than deepen internal divisions.
As the party engages in these sensitive discussions, Raila’s call for decorum seeks to foster a mature and constructive political dialogue.
