Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has praised former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, stating that his love for the people of Kenya is unparalleled. Speaking at an Iftar dinner hosted by Raila in Upperhill, Kingi described Raila as a selfless leader who has dedicated his life to serving others.
According to Kingi, Raila has always placed the needs of the people above his own personal interests. He emphasized that since he first encountered Raila in politics, he has never seen him live for himself but rather for the benefit of Kenyans.
“It’s very refreshing once again to sit by the side of Baba (Raila Odinga) and just tap his wisdom. Baba, your love for the people is unparalleled in this country,” Kingi stated. “You have for so many years lived your life for others. I don’t remember any moment since I joined politics as a young boy seeing you living for yourself. You’ve always lived for others, and even today’s gathering is a testimony that you care about people.”
Beyond his dedication to the people, Kingi highlighted Raila’s role as a mentor to many leaders, including himself. He likened Raila to legendary Arsenal coach Arsène Wenger, who was known for nurturing unknown talents and transforming them into football stars.
Kingi recounted his own political journey, acknowledging Raila as a pivotal figure in his rise to prominence. “For the many years I have worked with Raila, he doesn’t care about how heavy or light your name is. If he sees potential in you, he will pick you and make you a star. I am a living testimony. I come from a family that is not political; I was the first politician in our family,” he said.
He further elaborated that Raila’s mentorship paved the way for him to become a Cabinet Minister despite lacking a political godfather. “I had no political shoulder to lean on, but when I entered politics in 2007, Raila Odinga saw potential in me, held my hand, and made me a Cabinet Minister. Today, I am a star because I have walked through Baba’s hands.”
Kingi concluded by asserting that anyone mentored by Raila who fails to succeed has only themselves to blame. “Anybody who has gone through his hands and has not become a star, shida ni yako (the problem is yours).”
Raila’s influence in shaping Kenya’s political landscape and nurturing future leaders continues to define his legacy as a leader who genuinely prioritizes the welfare of the people.
