Nairobi witnessed violent protests on Wednesday morning following the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy in the Majengo and Pumwani areas. The Form Three student was allegedly shot by undercover police officers during a Tuesday night operation, sparking outrage among residents.
According to witnesses, the protests began around 6 a.m., with residents attacking police cars, blocking roads, and demanding justice for the slain teenager. In the ensuing chaos, at least two police vehicles were set ablaze, and several properties were destroyed. The demonstrations quickly spread to the nearby Gikomba market, catching many by surprise.
Nairobi police commander George Sedah confirmed the destruction of property, stating that criminal elements had taken advantage of the protests. He explained that the unrest stemmed from an operation conducted by undercover officers at Majengo Social Hall the previous night.
Police were reportedly conducting a random search targeting a well-known suspect allegedly involved in drug trafficking. When officers approached the group of youths, the suspect resisted and called for help from passersby coming from a mosque. The situation escalated when the crowd turned on the officers, forcing one of them to fire a shot in self-defense.
Tragically, the bullet struck the 17-year-old in the head. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. During the confrontation, one of the officers sustained serious injuries to his hip, hand, and back.
The shooting ignited outrage among locals, who took to the streets early Wednesday, lighting bonfires and clashing with police. Security officers responded with tear gas and live bullets to disperse the crowd. Businesses in the area remained closed for hours as tensions persisted.
Senior police officers were deployed to contain the protests and prevent further escalation. Sedah stated that authorities had convened a meeting with community leaders to address the situation and urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
The incident has once again raised concerns about police conduct in Nairobi’s informal settlements, with calls for accountability and justice for the deceased student. Authorities have promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the shooting.
