President William Ruto has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late George Oduor, long-time bodyguard to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, acknowledging that he too once benefitted from Oduor’s security services during their time together in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Speaking at Oduor’s funeral service in Ndori, Siaya County, on Saturday, Ruto described the fallen officer as a patriot of immense integrity, competence, and loyalty. Oduor passed away on April 2 at a Nairobi hospital following a short illness at the age of 57.
“I came to know George as a member of ODM. We were in many places together, and someone mentioned I also benefitted from his services that is true,” Ruto said. “Whenever we went into situations that required protection, George was always there.”
The President shared fond memories of Oduor’s professionalism, recalling how his presence offered a sense of security during tense political engagements. He even joked about mistakenly thinking one of the attendees, Lumumba, was a security officer, only to discover he is now an elected MCA.
Ruto said his attendance at the funeral was a gesture of respect for a man who embodied the values of the bottom-up philosophy, having served with dedication despite holding a humble position.
“George demonstrated beyond any doubt that he was a competent and loyal Kenyan. He served not only as a security officer but also as a trusted confidant to Raila Odinga,” he said. “His humility, discipline, and unwavering loyalty make him a shining example of patriotism.”
The President expressed his condolences to the widow, Mama Caren Auma, and commended her strength during the emotional tributes. He also acknowledged the pain evident in Raila Odinga’s speech, emphasizing the deep bond shared between the two.
George Oduor had served as Raila’s bodyguard since 1995, becoming a familiar and reassuring figure in Kenya’s political landscape. He was laid to rest at his home in Ndori, near Bondo.
His passing marks the end of an era for those who worked closely with him, and his legacy of loyalty and service will be remembered by leaders and citizens alike.
