President William Ruto has emphasized the importance of protecting children from harmful influences in society, including corruption, pedophiles, and drug peddlers. Speaking on Sunday at the African Inland Church in Kapng’etik, Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County, the President highlighted the need for parents, teachers, and other guardians to ensure that children grow up in environments free from negative influences that could corrupt their values or hinder their potential.
Ruto stressed that children must be safeguarded from individuals who seek to instill hatred towards their parents, teachers, and national leaders. “We must equally protect all our children from pedophiles, drug peddlers, and those who want to corrupt our children,” he stated. The President called on society to be vigilant in preventing any forces that could divert children from their positive development, be it in academics, arts, or sports.
The President also reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the education of all children. He urged parents to provide encouragement and support for their children’s aspirations, whether they excel in academics, sports, or creative industries. Teachers and instructors, according to Ruto, play a vital role in ensuring that every child receives the best possible education, regardless of their interests or abilities.
Ruto further emphasized that education is the key equalizer in society, sharpening the nation’s most valuable resource – human capital. To this end, his government is investing heavily in educational and technical institutions, ensuring that schools, TVETs, and universities are equipped to foster the diverse talents and skills present within the population.
The President’s remarks come at a time when students at Butere Girls High School in Kakamega County staged a protest following the arrest of their drama play director, Cleophas Malala. The protest, which resulted in police using teargas to disperse the students, highlights ongoing tensions in educational institutions that need to be addressed as part of fostering a healthy learning environment.
In conclusion, Ruto’s call to protect children from harmful influences, while also ensuring they receive the best educational opportunities, reflects a broader commitment to the future of Kenya’s youth.
