President William Ruto has nominated Hanna Wendot Cheptumo, the widow of the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, for a Cabinet Secretary position in a move that underscores his administration’s political strategy and commitment to gender representation.
In an announcement made by Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, Wendot was nominated to head the Ministry of Gender, Culture, the Arts, and Heritage. If approved by Parliament, she will become part of the nation’s apex policy organ, playing a critical role in shaping policies related to gender equality and cultural preservation.
Her nomination follows the passing of her husband, Senator William Cheptumo, earlier this year. The decision to elevate Wendot to such a senior position signals Ruto’s intent to honor the late senator’s legacy while also reinforcing the role of women in leadership.
Also nominated to the Cabinet is Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku, who is set to take over the Ministry of Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes. If approved, he will replace Justin Muturi, a former National Assembly Speaker who has served in Ruto’s administration.
Koskei, while making the announcement, emphasized the President’s confidence in the nominees’ ability to drive the government’s agenda. “The President has congratulated the nominees on their nominations and conveyed his best wishes as they undergo the requisite parliamentary approval process in fulfillment of the legal requirements set under our Constitution,” Koskei stated.
The nominations come at a crucial time when Ruto’s administration is seeking to solidify its governance structure and maintain public confidence. Wendot’s potential appointment could bolster support for the government in Baringo County, a region that played a significant role in Ruto’s election victory.
As the nominees await parliamentary vetting, political analysts will be keen to see how these appointments shape the broader political landscape and governance priorities. The move is expected to generate discussions on gender inclusivity, political succession, and the strategic alignment of Ruto’s Cabinet.
If approved, Wendot and Ruku will be tasked with ensuring effective service delivery in their respective ministries, contributing to the government’s wider development agenda.
