Wamba town in Samburu County was brought to a standstill as residents and traders staged protests over escalating insecurity in the area. Demonstrators burned tyres and blocked the town’s main entrance road, paralyzing business activities for the better part of the day.
The protests were sparked by a violent attack that resulted in the killing of a local trader and injuries to several others, including children. According to residents, this was just the latest in a series of attacks by bandits that have claimed over ten lives since the beginning of the year. The angry protesters accused authorities of failing to take decisive action to curb the menace.
During the attack, two shop assistants sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Maralal Referral Hospital for treatment. County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Health, Mr. Lekudere, confirmed that while both victims were in stable condition, one remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being shot in the head.
One of the injured survivors, who sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, recounted his harrowing experience. He claimed that about seven armed bandits stormed the shop and attempted to kill everyone present. A bullet remains lodged in his chest as doctors continue monitoring his condition.
Area Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Langat Mutai acknowledged the incident and called for calm among residents. He assured the community that security personnel were actively pursuing the bandits to bring them to justice.
However, the residents remain skeptical, citing repeated cases of insecurity that have not been adequately addressed. Many have expressed fears for their safety and livelihoods, urging the government to take urgent measures to restore peace in the region.
In recent years, banditry attacks have been a persistent problem in Samburu and neighboring counties, with armed groups targeting traders, herders, and travelers. The growing insecurity has severely impacted the local economy, discouraging investment and development in the area.
The Wamba protests signal mounting frustration among residents who feel abandoned by authorities. Unless swift and effective action is taken, tensions in the region could escalate further, threatening the stability and safety of the local community.
