Port-au-Prince, Haiti – Another Kenyan police officer deployed as part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti was killed on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, during a violent clash with armed gangs in the Lower Artibonite region. The incident, which occurred approximately 92 kilometres north of Port-au-Prince, marks the second fatality among Kenyan forces since their deployment earlier this year.
Ambush and Fatal Attack
According to MSS reports, the officer was part of a patrol team whose armored vehicle became stuck in a ditch suspected to have been dug deliberately by gangs. As recovery efforts were underway, armed assailants launched a surprise attack, fatally shooting the officer. The gangs reportedly took custody of his body before specialized teams were deployed to retrieve it.
The Kenyan contingent confirmed that the officer had been declared missing before his death was announced. “One MSS Kenyan contingent officer remains unaccounted for. Specialized teams have been deployed to conduct a search and determine his whereabouts,” the mission stated.
Second Kenyan Fatality in Haiti
This tragic incident follows the death of Police Constable Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai, who was killed on February 23, 2025, during an anti-gang operation in the same volatile region. The repeated attacks highlight the dangerous conditions faced by international forces assisting Haitian authorities in combating rampant gang violence.
Challenges of the MSS Mission
The Kenyan-led MSS mission, authorized by the United Nations, aims to support Haiti’s overwhelmed police force in restoring order. However, gangs controlling large parts of the country have repeatedly targeted security forces, using ambush tactics and roadblocks to hinder operations.
Tuesday’s attack underscores the difficulties in stabilizing Haiti, where gangs continue to dominate key supply routes and urban areas. The loss of another officer raises concerns about the effectiveness of current strategies and the safety of foreign troops in the mission.
Calls for Reinforced Strategy
As Haiti’s crisis deepens, international partners are under pressure to reassess security approaches to prevent further casualties. The Kenyan government has yet to issue an official statement, but the growing risks may prompt a review of its commitment to the mission.
