Baringo County bid farewell to its senator, William Cheptumo, in an emotional funeral service attended by top political leaders, including President William Ruto. Cheptumo, who passed away on February 15, 2025, at the age of 57 while undergoing treatment in Nairobi, was eulogized as a dedicated leader and patriot.
The funeral service was held at Arap Moi Secondary School grounds in Bartabwa, Baringo County. Among the high-profile attendees were Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and several Cabinet Secretaries, who joined family, friends, and locals in mourning the senator’s passing.
A police helicopter was used to transport Cheptumo’s remains from Nairobi to his rural home, a sign of the respect and honor accorded to the late legislator. To accommodate the large number of mourners, giant screens were mounted outside key locations, including the Baringo County Assembly, Kabarnet Market, and Kabartonjo centre, allowing residents to follow the proceedings remotely.
President Ruto led the nation in paying tribute, describing Cheptumo as a leader who worked tirelessly for the people of Baringo and the country at large. “His commitment to public service was unmatched. Kenya has lost a true servant leader,” Ruto said.
Cheptumo had served in various capacities, including as a Member of Parliament and later as Baringo Senator. His legacy in championing development projects and advocating for peace in the volatile region remains his enduring mark in Kenyan politics.
As he was laid to rest, the people of Baringo remembered him for his humility, leadership, and dedication to service. The nation mourns the loss of a leader whose impact will be felt for years to come.
