A tragic incident has shocked the residents of Kwa Nyunyi village in Makueni County after a one-day-old baby was found alive after being buried. The heartbreaking event has raised serious concerns about child welfare and the need for vigilance in reporting such cases.
According to area Assistant Chief Francis Kaluma, authorities were alerted by concerned neighbors who suspected foul play. Acting on the tip, Kaluma ordered the family to exhume the infant. To the community’s shock, the baby was still alive despite being buried.
“I was informed that a woman had delivered and buried her baby alive. I went there and demanded to know where the baby was buried. When they exhumed the body, we were shocked to find the child still alive,” Kaluma recounted.
The infant was immediately rushed to Sultan Hamud Hospital for urgent medical attention. Despite the swift intervention, the baby succumbed to injuries on Sunday morning, leaving the community in mourning and calling for justice.
Authorities have since arrested the mother of the child and the grandmother, who are currently being detained at Salama Police Station. They are expected to face legal proceedings concerning the death of the newborn and the illegal burial. The case has raised alarm over rising incidents of child neglect and abuse, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of child protection laws.
This harrowing event highlights the urgency of addressing issues surrounding maternal mental health, societal pressures, and economic challenges that often lead to such tragic decisions. It is crucial for communities to be vigilant and report any suspected cases of child abuse to the relevant authorities.
Local leaders and child protection advocates have condemned the act, urging parents to seek help when facing difficulties instead of resorting to inhumane actions. “This is a clear case of neglect and possible desperation. We need to create awareness and ensure that mothers in distress know where to seek support,” said a social worker from the region.
As investigations continue, authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice for the innocent child. They have also called upon community members to report any suspicious activities concerning child welfare to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding children’s rights and ensuring that vulnerable members of society receive the care and protection they deserve.
