Members of the Siana Group Ranch are celebrating a long-awaited victory after the Environment and Lands Court (ELC) ruled in their favor, dismissing a six-year-old case that had stalled the development of their land adjacent to the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
Justice Charles Mbogo delivered the ruling, paving the way for the issuance of title deeds for the expansive 161,000-hectare parcel. The court determined that the case, filed in 2019 by Siana Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Moses Ole Sikona, lacked merit, as the group ranch had already been dissolved before the petition was filed. Consequently, the court deemed the matter moot since title deeds had already been issued to the rightful owners.
The legal dispute originated when Ole Sikona challenged the subdivision of plots, alleging flaws in the allocation process and seeking to halt the issuance of title deeds. However, the court found no legal grounds to support his claims and dismissed the petition.
Siana Group Ranch Chairman, Kilesi Ole Sayianton, expressed his relief and joy over the ruling, emphasizing the significance of land ownership for the community. “For six years, some of our title deeds were held in court, preventing us from developing our land. Today, we celebrate this ruling, which finally gives us what is rightfully ours,” he stated.
Ole Sayianton invited both local and international investors to explore the economic potential of the area, which boasts abundant wildlife and tourism opportunities. He also urged members to maintain peace and unity to enhance the region’s attractiveness to investors and tourists.
The group ranch’s legal counsel, Martin Ole Kamwaro, hailed the judgment as a landmark decision that restored certainty to the people of Siana. He reassured the community that all public utility land had been appropriately allocated and remained intact.
Board member Ole Sururu echoed similar sentiments, calling the ruling a milestone that would enable members to engage in meaningful economic activities. “We thank the courts for upholding justice and listening to the voices of the people. After six long years, we celebrate a well-deserved victory today,” he said.
With the legal battle now behind them, the people of Siana Group Ranch can focus on development and economic growth, securing a prosperous future for generations to come.
