National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula is set to visit the home of the late former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, Wafula Chebukati, in Trans Nzoia County today to condole with his family. Wetang’ula will be accompanied by a delegation of leaders as they pay their respects to the family of the late electoral chief, who passed away on February 20 at a Nairobi hospital.
Chebukati, who led the IEBC during Kenya’s 2017 and 2022 general elections, succumbed to brain cancer after a prolonged battle with the disease. He was first diagnosed in April 2023, just months after leaving office. Despite undergoing surgery in Germany in April 2024 and receiving further treatment, his health deteriorated, and he was hospitalized in early 2025. He passed away while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
His family has released a burial program outlining key events leading to his final send-off. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 5, at Christ Is The Answer Ministries (CITAM) Karen in Nairobi, beginning at 11 a.m. This will be followed by a special tribute service on Friday, March 7, at his Kitale home in Trans Nzoia, where family, friends, and colleagues will gather to celebrate his life and legacy. Chebukati will then be laid to rest on March 8 at his rural home.
Chebukati’s passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Kenya’s electoral history. His tenure at the IEBC was marked by major electoral processes and critical decision-making moments that shaped the country’s democratic landscape. His leadership, particularly during the hotly contested 2022 elections, remains a point of discussion in Kenya’s political circles.
As tributes continue to pour in, Wetangula’s visit is expected to bring comfort to the bereaved family and reinforce the legacy of Chebukati’s service to the nation. Leaders, dignitaries, and the public will have the opportunity to pay their last respects in the coming days as Kenya bids farewell to the former IEBC chairman.
