Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula has called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to ensure transparency and integrity in the ongoing selection of new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners. Speaking during a church service at Mokwo Parish in Keiyo South Constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Wetangula urged lawmakers to prioritize national interests over political affiliations.
Emphasizing Parliament’s critical role in shaping Kenya’s electoral future, Wetang’ula reminded MPs that the Selection Panel had already published a long list of candidates. He stressed that it was now their duty to ensure the final picks uphold democratic values and maintain the stability of the nation’s electoral system.
“Nyinyi wabunge mko kwenye harakati ya kuchagua IEBC mpya. Tafadhali, mutafute Wakenya wenye msimamo, wanaotii sheria, na wanaoheshimu katiba,” Wetang’ula stated.
He underscored that a strong and independent IEBC is crucial for maintaining electoral integrity and public confidence in Kenya’s democratic processes. He warned against partisan interests interfering with the selection process, urging MPs to safeguard the credibility of elections.
Beyond electoral matters, Wetangula reaffirmed his support for President William Ruto’s administration, calling for national unity and development. He emphasized the need for leaders across all political divides to work together, noting that political instability hinders progress.
“Tunamuunga mkono Rais wetu kikamilifu, ili alete watu pamoja. Katika nchi yetu, tunacheza siasa za kiwango cha juu. Ikifika siku ya kura, tunapiga kura, na kiongozi anajitokeza,” he remarked.
The Speaker also highlighted the importance of mentoring young leaders, revealing that he had chosen to honor an invitation from a young politician, Kimaiyo, over attending a high-profile event with the President. He stressed the need for seasoned politicians to support the next generation of leaders to ensure a stable political future.
Touching on recent political developments, including the meeting between President Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga, Wetang’ula clarified that strategic decisions in their political camp are made collectively, reinforcing the need for structured leadership.
As the country moves forward, Wetangula urged MPs and leaders to put the nation’s interests first, particularly in matters of electoral reforms, to ensure a transparent and democratic future for Kenya.
