Police in Isinya, Kajiado County, are searching for a 27-year-old suspect who allegedly killed his girlfriend and then reported the crime to the authorities before disappearing. The suspect called Isinya police station on February 3, informing them that he had murdered his girlfriend, Risper Ngendo Munene, 24, at a house where he worked as a caretaker in Olooltepes sub-location, Oloosirkon location of Isinya sub-county.
After making the chilling call, the suspect hung up and switched off his phone, making it difficult for police to trace him. Officers who responded to the scene over the weekend found Ngendo’s body locked inside the house. Her body was covered with a blanket on the bed and showed signs of violence, with black marks on the limbs and neck. It was also swollen, indicating possible strangulation. Ngendo had reportedly traveled to visit the suspect when the tragic incident occurred.
The decomposing body was transported to Nairobi Funeral Home (City Mortuary) pending an autopsy as investigators work to determine the motive behind the killing. The police have intensified efforts to track down the suspect.
Murder Suspect Found Dead in Police Cell
Meanwhile, in Tharaka Nithi County, police are investigating the death of a murder suspect in custody at Chogoria police station. The suspect, James Muthaura, 30, was being held for allegedly kidnapping a child when he was found dead on Thursday morning. Other detainees raised the alarm, prompting officers to check the cell, where they discovered Muthaura had died by suicide using his underwear to hang himself from the ventilation grill.
Senior police officers, along with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), have launched an inquiry into the circumstances of Muthaura’s death. His body has been taken to Chuka Referral Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Escape from Custody Cases on the Rise
In a separate incident, two male suspects escaped from Laisamis police station under unclear circumstances. Abraham Kimeto and Peter Gitau, who were being held for breaking and stealing as well as handling stolen property, disappeared from custody on Thursday morning. The pair was scheduled to appear before a mobile court when officers discovered they were missing. Investigators suspect they may have been aided in their escape, leading to the arrest of an officer who was on duty at the time. A search operation has been launched to rearrest the fugitives.
Escape incidents have been increasing over the past month. Last month, eight suspects broke out of Wundanyi prison in Taita Taveta by cutting through the roof of their cell. So far, four have been recaptured and transferred to Manyani prisons, while authorities continue hunting for the remaining escapees.
