Police in Thika have seized bhang worth Ksh. 5 million in an operation conducted at Kiganjo Estate, an area notorious for illegal drug activities. The Tuesday operation, executed after a tip-off from community members, saw three suspects escape, leaving behind a vehicle loaded with the illicit substance.
Thika Sub-County Police Commander Lawrence Muchangi confirmed the seizure, highlighting the role of community policing in the operation. He stated that the police had been tracking the activities of a well-known drug baron who has remained elusive despite multiple arrests and ongoing investigations.
“This was a joint effort between our officers and community policing members who provided crucial intelligence. We had been monitoring the suspect, and on this occasion, we managed to seize the drugs, though the suspects fled the scene,” Muchangi stated.
According to the police, the suspect has been on their watchlist for an extended period and has been arrested on similar charges in the past. However, he has consistently secured release through legal bonds and resumed operations, making him a significant supplier of bhang in the region. The authorities have intensified their search for him and his accomplices, urging the public to continue sharing any suspicious activity.
Residents of Kiganjo Estate, a known hub for drug trafficking, expressed relief following the police operation. Some locals commended law enforcement for taking action, but others voiced concerns over the suspect’s repeated release from custody. They called for stricter legal measures to curb the rising drug menace in the region.
One resident, who requested anonymity, stated, “We are tired of seeing the same individuals arrested and released only to continue ruining our youth with drugs. The government needs to take stronger action.”
The impounded vehicle is currently being held at Kimuchu Police Post as investigations continue. Police believe the car was being used for the transportation and distribution of the bhang. They are now working to establish further links between the drug network and other criminal activities in the area.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to fighting drug trafficking and have assured the public that those responsible will be brought to justice. They have also encouraged community members to remain vigilant and report any related illegal activities to aid in ongoing investigations.
As the police intensify their crackdown, the public awaits to see whether justice will prevail or if the notorious drug baron will once again evade the law.
