Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the assault of a widow during her estranged husband’s burial in Nyamira County. The incident, which was captured in a viral video, has sparked outrage across the country.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the assault took place on Friday, March 21, 2025, in Kiambere area, Mwongorisi Sub-location of Nyamira County. The disturbing footage shows a group of men forcing the woman to throw a handful of soil into the grave as part of a burial ritual. When she resisted, the men resorted to whipping her.
Reports indicate that the woman had separated from her husband years before his passing and had lost touch with his family. Following his tragic death in a road accident, she was contacted by her mother-in-law and asked to bring their children to his funeral. However, when she sent her cousin with the children instead, members of the deceased’s family allegedly turned violent, accusing her of neglect and demanding that she perform the burial ritual.
The ritual, which is common in some cultural traditions, symbolizes a widow’s final farewell and goodwill to her deceased spouse. However, certain beliefs suggest that participating in the ritual binds a widow to her late husband, preventing her from remarrying. The woman’s refusal to take part angered her in-laws, leading to the violent altercation that was caught on camera.
In response to the public outcry, the NPS issued a statement condemning the act, terming it as “deeply regrettable, devoid of civility and basic human dignity.” The police assured the public that the victim had been located and was receiving the necessary support.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that the arrested suspects are in custody, pending further investigations and arraignment. Authorities also thanked members of the public for providing crucial information that led to the swift arrests.
The NPS reaffirmed its commitment to upholding law and order and vowed to ensure that those responsible for the barbaric act face justice. The incident has reignited conversations on the need to protect women’s rights and outlaw harmful cultural practices that perpetuate violence and discrimination.
