Top security officials are set to visit the Angata Barikoi area in Narok County after clashes stemming from a land dispute resulted in the deaths of five people on Monday. The deadly unrest, which also left seven others injured, has drawn attention from both local and national leaders, with security chiefs planning a visit to assess the situation and discuss a way forward.
The violence erupted during a demonstration against the planned demarcation of a 6,000-acre piece of land, which locals fear could lead to land grabbing. The protest turned chaotic when the police intervened, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including a teacher, and injuries to several others. Among the injured were police officers. The unrest saw residents torching vehicles that had ferried government officials to the area for the controversial demarcation exercise.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen expressed condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a swift recovery. He reassured the public that security had been reinforced and emphasized that the government would protect the locals and their property. Murkomen also denied claims that the land would be taken away, urging residents to remain calm ahead of the visit by the security bosses.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly condemned the use of lethal force by security officers during the incident. He called for accountability, demanding that those responsible for deploying the paramilitary officers be held accountable. Gachagua referred to the actions of the security forces as a “crime against humanity” and vowed to gather evidence to take further action.
Kanu chairman Gideon Moi also condemned the killings, criticizing the police for excessive force. He called for an immediate investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to ensure that those involved face justice.
As the situation remains volatile, the government is under pressure to address the root causes of the conflict and ensure a peaceful resolution.
