Chaos erupted along Jogoo Road in Nairobi as traders protested the demolition of structures at Uhuru Market, bringing transport to a standstill on Wednesday morning. The traders, fearing displacement, alleged that a private developer planned to tear down their stalls to pave the way for new constructions without providing an alternative location for their businesses.
The demonstration quickly escalated as the traders lit bonfires on the busy road, blocking traffic and causing major disruptions. Anti-riot police were swiftly deployed to quell the unrest, leading to running battles between law enforcement and the protesters.
Motorists plying the route were forced to seek alternative ways as the demonstrations continued for the better part of the morning. Police diverted traffic, and authorities issued advisories to road users to avoid the affected area until normalcy was restored.
According to reports, the protests started within Uhuru Market before spilling onto Jogoo Road. The traders, in a desperate attempt to voice their grievances, set tyres and litter ablaze near the junction of Likoni Road, just a short distance from St. Stephen’s Anglican Church of Kenya.
Nairobi police commander George Sedah confirmed that law enforcement officers were at the scene trying to restore order. He urged motorists to avoid the affected routes until the issue was resolved.
“Motorists can for now seek alternative routes as we address the issue,” Sedah stated.
The affected traders insist they were not consulted or offered alternative business spaces before the demolition plans commenced. Many have expressed concerns about their livelihoods, fearing they will be left with no means to sustain their families.
With rising tensions, the traders demand government intervention to protect their businesses and ensure fair treatment in redevelopment plans.
Efforts to engage relevant authorities in dialogue are ongoing, but until a resolution is reached, more protests could be expected, posing further disruptions to commuters and businesses along Jogoo Road.
