Police in Machakos County have launched an investigation into a violent attack that left two men dead and another seriously injured in the early hours of Saturday, February 22, 2025. The incident occurred along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway near the Petro City Petrol Station in Athi River.
The victims were identified as 61-year-old Robert Irungu Makeri and an unidentified man, while 64-year-old Samwel Njoroge sustained severe injuries. The attack, which happened at approximately 4:15 a.m., was reported to the Athi River Police Station under OB NO: 20/22/02/2025 at 8:10 a.m.
According to a police report seen. a local administrator received a phone call from a concerned citizen informing him of three men lying on the roadside with deep cut wounds. Authorities responded swiftly, with officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Scenes of Crime personnel visiting the location to process the scene.
Machakos County Police Commander Patrick Lobolia confirmed the fatalities and stated that the deaths resulted from a clash between two rival groups over undisclosed reasons. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found three male adults with extensive injuries, one of whom had already succumbed.
One of the victims, identified as Samwel Njoroge, was conscious and provided his identity. Another victim, found unconscious, had an identification card bearing the name Robert Irungu Makeri. The third man, who was already deceased, had no identification documents on him.
The injured men were rushed to Shalom Community Hospital, where Robert Irungu Makeri was pronounced dead upon arrival. Both bodies were subsequently transferred to the hospital’s mortuary, where they await post-mortem examinations.
Authorities have yet to establish the motive behind the attack, and detectives attached to the Athi River Police Station have commenced thorough investigations. Law enforcement is urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to aid in solving the case.
As investigations continue, residents of Athi River remain on high alert, concerned about security in the area. The police have assured the public that they are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and maintaining safety in the region.
