The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) National Steering Committee (NSC) is set to meet on Wednesday in a session expected to ratify a working arrangement with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
The crucial meeting, which will be chaired by President William Ruto, comes at a time when the head of state is keen on expanding the government’s political base ahead of the 2027 general elections. The NSC, as a key decision-making organ of UDA, holds the authority to approve major political alliances and coalitions.
Reports indicate that the committee will be briefed on the framework of the proposed collaboration between UDA and ODM, marking a significant shift in Kenya’s political landscape. Sources suggest that the agreement will be formalized by Friday, after Raila concludes his ongoing grassroots consultations.
The ODM leader has been engaging political leaders from his Luo Nyanza stronghold, parts of Western Kenya, and is currently gathering feedback from supporters in the Coast region before making a final decision. His nationwide engagements aim to consolidate support for the new alliance, which is expected to shape the country’s political future.
A senior UDA official confirmed that the NSC meeting will proceed as scheduled but declined to disclose specific details. “Oh yes, it is an important party meeting,” the official stated.
Meanwhile, the negotiation team appointed by both Ruto and Raila has reportedly finalized its work, setting the stage for the two leaders to officially sign their cooperation agreement. As part of the deal, ODM is expected to secure additional government appointments, including Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, and ambassadorial positions.
In a parallel development, ODM’s Central Management Committee (CMC) is also expected to convene later this week to review a report prepared by its technical team, which was tasked with negotiating the terms of engagement with UDA. The committee previously met in Kisumu on February 27 and assigned Prof. Adams Oloo’s team to refine the details of the arrangement.
ODM Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi emphasized that the party remains open to engaging with leaders from diverse political backgrounds. “We may need to convene on short notice to process feedback from consultations. Our party chief is within his mandate to engage various political leaders,” Osotsi stated.
As the political realignment gains momentum, all eyes are on the anticipated Ruto-Raila pact, which could redefine Kenya’s governance structure ahead of the next general elections.
