Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has opened up about his retirement, stating that he is enjoying the experience and embracing the freedom that comes with it. Speaking on Sunday at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Meru County during a Thanksgiving mass, the former head of state shared his reflections on life after leaving office.
“Maisha ya retirement ni mazuri sana, hauna responsibilities, unaangalia wale wengine kwa TV … Walikuwa wanafikiria ukubwa ndio kazi, wengine naona wanajionea tayari,” Uhuru remarked. This translates to, “Retirement life is good. No responsibilities, you just watch others on TV. They thought being a big person was work, but I can see they are now seeing it for themselves.”
The mass was held in celebration of the installation of Bishop Jackson Murugara as the Coadjutor Bishop of Meru. During the event, Uhuru congratulated the bishop, extending his best wishes and emphasizing the critical role of the church in guiding the nation.
“We wish you the best. May you continue with the great work of spreading the gospel. As you continue healing souls, may you also help in giving this country direction,” Uhuru said. He further highlighted the responsibility of religious leaders in ensuring the nation remains on the right path.
The former president attended the event in the company of notable figures, including former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, former Meru Woman Representative Florence Kajuju, and former Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti. The gathering brought together numerous congregants who came to honor Bishop Murugara’s new role following his appointment by the Vatican.
Before his current position, Bishop Murugara served as the rector of the Consolata Shrine in Westlands, Nairobi. His appointment marks a significant milestone in his clerical journey, with many in the Meru Diocese looking forward to his leadership and service.
Uhuru’s remarks about retirement offer a glimpse into his post-presidency life, reflecting contentment and a sense of relief from the burdens of leadership. His presence at the event also reaffirmed his continued engagement in national matters, even as he enjoys his retirement.
