Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has called on the Mt. Kenya region to continue supporting President William Ruto’s development agenda, emphasizing that the region stands to gain more by being part of the government than by siding with the opposition. Waiguru made the remarks during the opening of the Goat Artificial Insemination (A.I) Center at Ahiti Ndoba in Mwea Constituency, an event attended by President Ruto.
The Governor asserted that despite some claims that President Ruto has lost political ground in Mt. Kenya following his fallout with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the turnout at the event showed the President still enjoys significant support in the region. Waiguru further dismissed claims of defection to the opposition, stating that the region remains committed to the President’s leadership, noting that the 2027 politics will be determined by the performance of the government, not political rhetoric.
Waiguru also took the opportunity to highlight several key development projects in Kirinyaga County that have been made possible through collaboration between the national and county governments. Among the notable projects is the Goat A.I Center, which is poised to enhance goat production and improve food security in the area, benefiting local farming communities. Additionally, the Governor spoke about the ongoing upgrade of Kagio Market, which will see the creation of a modern, two-storey facility to accommodate over 1,000 traders, complete with cold storage, a food court, and other amenities. The market, which generates over KSh 330,000 weekly in revenue, plays a crucial role in the local economy.
Waiguru also mentioned the construction of 18 markets across the county, including facilities in areas such as Kerugoya, Kutus, and Makutano. Plans are also underway to upgrade more markets, including Kibingoti, Kimbimbi, and Mukarara, with the goal of enhancing infrastructure to support farmers and traders.
In her closing remarks, Waiguru called on leaders to focus on delivering on their promises and prioritizing the development needs of the people, instead of engaging in divisive politicking.
