Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi Mohamed has strongly refuted allegations made by Dela Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Yussuf Hussein Ahmed, who claimed that the Governor was behind his alleged abduction. The incident, which took place on August 13, 2024, saw MCA Yussuf abducted by armed gunmen along Nairobi’s Enterprise Road. He was released on March 8, 2025, after being held in captivity for six months.
In his statement, MCA Yussuf suggested that his abduction was a direct consequence of his opposition to the 2024 Wajir County budget. He alleged that the Governor orchestrated the kidnapping in response to his strong stance against the budget, which was passed while he was detained.
Governor Abdullahi, in a press statement issued on April 11, 2025, dismissed these claims as “false, misleading, and speculative,” attributing them to a broader political agenda ahead of the 2027 elections. The Governor expressed relief over Yussuf’s safe return, condemned enforced disappearances, and urged the national government to prioritize investigations into such incidents. However, he firmly denied any involvement in the abduction, stating that security matters fall under the national government’s jurisdiction, not his.
The Governor also accused political opponents of using the situation to tarnish his name. He questioned why only MCA Yussuf, among those who opposed the budget, was allegedly targeted, pointing out that several others had also opposed the budget but were not abducted. He called on MCA Yussuf to provide credible evidence to support his claims and emphasized the importance of allowing due process to take its course.
Governor Abdullahi remained steadfast in his commitment to justice, peace, and the rule of law, urging the people of Wajir to stay calm as investigations into the matter continue.
