Leaders from Wajir County have thrown their weight behind President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga’s cooperation agreement, following the appointment of former Wajir North MP Ibrahim Ahmed Abdisalan as Principal Secretary (PS) for National Government Coordination at the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary.
During a gathering in Nairobi on Sunday, political and community leaders from the region expressed their gratitude to President Ruto and Odinga for recognizing their region in government appointments. They hailed Abdisalan’s nomination as a step towards greater inclusion of the North Eastern region in the national political landscape.
“We believe he has what it takes to deliver, and we are confident he will not let down the President and the Right Honorable Raila Odinga. We pray that the broad-based government will tackle the challenges facing Kenyans,” said one of the leaders.
The appointment of Abdisalan, who served as Wajir North MP from 2017 to 2022 under the ODM party, comes two weeks after President Ruto signed a political cooperation agreement with Odinga. The move is seen as part of Ruto’s broader strategy to build a more inclusive government ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abdisalan was among 14 individuals nominated for various PS positions, a decision that has been widely interpreted as an effort to consolidate political support across different regions. The Wajir leaders emphasized that the government’s strengthened relationship with the North Eastern region is critical for the area’s development and political inclusion.
“We appreciate the broad-based approach in governance. It ensures that all communities have a voice in national affairs. We hope that this partnership will lead to more representation from our region in future appointments,” another leader stated.
With the North Eastern region often feeling marginalized in past administrations, Abdisalan’s nomination signals a shift in government strategy towards fostering regional balance. Leaders from Wajir have now pledged their unwavering support for the current administration, hoping that this cooperation will yield further development opportunities for their people.
As the government moves forward with its inclusive governance agenda, all eyes will be on Abdisalan to see how he delivers in his new role and strengthens the ties between the national government and the North Eastern region.
