Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, once a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has openly defended his decision to support Gachagua’s impeachment. Wamatinga, who previously served as the chairman of the Mathira Constituency Development Fund during Gachagua’s tenure as Mathira MP, was among nine Mount Kenya senators who voted for Gachagua’s removal.
Addressing congregants at the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) in Kirai, Othaya, Wamatinga emphasized that his choice was driven by a commitment to the development and welfare of Nyeri County and the broader Mount Kenya region. He stated that supporting the impeachment was a necessary step to ensure that the region’s interests were prioritized and that leadership remained accountable to the people.
Following the impeachment, Wamatinga’s political trajectory saw a significant boost. The National Assembly unanimously approved his nomination to the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), filling the vacancy left by Laikipia Senator John Kinyua’s resignation. This move is perceived by many as a reward for his stance during the impeachment proceedings.
The impeachment of Gachagua has led to a notable realignment within the political landscape, especially among leaders from the Mount Kenya region. Wamatinga’s actions highlight the dynamic nature of political alliances and the shifting priorities of leaders aiming to align themselves with the evolving sentiments of their constituents.
As the region moves forward, the focus remains on how these political changes will impact development initiatives and representation at the national level. Wamatinga’s ascent to the PSC underscores the intricate balance between personal political decisions and broader regional interests.
