Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has raised alarm over her personal safety following what she termed as a suspicious and politically motivated summons by an individual falsely claiming to be a police officer. The MP revealed that she was called to appear before the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kiambu County, only to later discover that no official summons had been issued.
Speaking outside the Kiambu Police headquarters on Monday, Wamuchomba said she honored the call out of respect for the law. However, after consulting with senior officers, including the County and Regional Criminal Investigation Officers, it was confirmed that the person who had summoned her was not affiliated with the police service.
“The DCIO, the CCIO, and other senior officers informed me that they have no record of the summon. In fact, they suspect that the person behind the call could be linked to recent abductions in the region,” she stated.
The MP, a vocal leader from the Mt Kenya region, expressed deep concern for her safety, claiming that her bodyguard had recently been recalled, leaving her vulnerable. She demanded immediate reinstatement of her security and called on the government to guarantee her protection, especially as a woman leader.
“My life is in danger. I demand to be protected, not just as an MP but as a woman leader whose safety is constitutionally guaranteed,” she emphasized.
Wamuchomba also suggested that the mysterious summons may be politically driven, following growing tensions in her constituency. In a post on her verified X account over the weekend, she hinted that certain political actors may be targeting her because of her firm stance against unfulfilled government promises and coercion tactics allegedly used on her constituents.
“The people of Githunguri have refused to be lured by fake promises and failed projects. I believe this summon was a reaction to that,” she wrote.
The incident adds to the rising concerns over the safety of outspoken politicians, especially those challenging the status quo within their parties or regions. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
