Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has called on the Luo community to rally behind Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka in his bid for the presidency in 2027. Speaking during a burial ceremony in Ng’iya, Alego, Siaya County, on Saturday, Ndeti emphasized the unwavering support that the Kamba community has extended to ODM leader Raila Odinga for the past 15 years. She argued that it was now time for reciprocity.
“As the Kamba community, we have stood with Baba (Raila) for 15 years. We have sacrificed and given our votes generously. Raila has even won constituencies in Ukambani because of our support,” Ndeti stated.
The Machakos Governor, who was hosted by Siaya Governor James Orengo, urged the Luo community to return the favor by backing Kalonzo Musyoka in 2027. “Kalonzo has declared his presidential ambition, and as our friends, we ask you to stand with us just as we have stood with you,” she added.
However, Governor Orengo responded by urging leaders to focus on resolving constitutional, structural, and electoral challenges before delving into succession politics. He noted that various leaders, including Jeremiah Kioni, Eugene Wamalwa, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, have also expressed interest in the presidency.
“Wavinya, you have spoken well, and Kalonzo is my friend, but let’s take a step back and address the core issues affecting the country first. We must resolve constitutional and electoral challenges before engaging in 2027 politics,” Orengo advised.
Safina Party leader and former presidential candidate Jimi Wanjigi echoed Orengo’s sentiments, cautioning against tribal-based political alignments. He insisted that national unity should be based on shared issues affecting the public rather than ethnic considerations.
“We have no problem coming together, but it must be on matters that concern the common mwananchi, not tribalism. We must unite to address issues such as economic hardships rather than engaging in outdated tribal politics,” Wanjigi remarked.
Ndeti’s remarks highlight the ongoing debate over the future of opposition politics in Kenya. While Kalonzo has been a key figure in Raila’s coalition over the years, questions remain over whether Odinga’s stronghold will back him in 2027. The response from Luo leaders indicates that political alignments are still fluid, and broader consensus-building efforts may be needed before the next general election.
