Western Kenya’s political landscape is shifting as six Members of Parliament have thrown their weight behind Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and MSMEs, Wycliffe Oparanya, endorsing him for the Deputy President position in the 2027 general election.
The leaders made the announcement during the disbursement of Uwezo Funds in Khwisero Sub-County, where they cited Oparanya’s leadership credentials and strong development track record. As a former Kakamega Governor and a key figure in the current administration, the MPs believe Oparanya is best suited to elevate the region’s political standing at the national level.
Dubbed the “Khwisero Declaration,” the endorsement underscores a strategic move to ensure Western Kenya has a seat at the negotiating table in 2027. Khwisero MP Christopher Aseka urged Oparanya to make his intentions official, assuring him of unwavering support.
“You have the experience, the vision, and the people’s trust. We are ready to support you on the ballot,” Aseka declared.
Lurambi MP Titus Khamala reinforced the call for unity, stressing that the region must consolidate its political influence.
“We cannot afford to be rudderless, clueless, and network-less. Our community must stand together and ensure we have a seat at the table,” Khamala stated.
The MPs also called on Oparanya to join forces with other regional leaders, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, to strengthen Western Kenya’s bargaining power. Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe emphasized the need for strategic negotiations to secure a leadership position at the national level.
“This is the time for Western Kenya to unite and demand a leadership position. Oparanya must negotiate and take the Deputy President position,” Wangwe remarked.
Ikolomani MP Bernard Shinali and Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda echoed their support, highlighting Oparanya’s transformative leadership and commitment to development.
The endorsement marks a new phase in Western Kenya’s political realignment, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest as the region seeks a formidable role in the 2027 government. Whether Oparanya officially declares his candidacy remains to be seen, but the momentum behind him is already building.
