Police in Isebania, Migori County, have arrested a 23-year-old woman and seized 423 kilograms of a substance suspected to be bhang in a major anti-narcotics operation. The seizure, which has a street value of Ksh12.69 million, followed a raid at a godown in Taraqwiti village, approximately four kilometers from the Isebania police station.
According to a police report, officers from the Isebania Police Station, acting on a tip-off from members of the public, stormed the godown and recovered 14 full sacks and two smaller sacks of dry plant material suspected to be cannabis sativa. The suspect, who was present in the compound during the operation, informed the police that the godown belongs to her brother-in-law. She was immediately taken into custody.
The raid also led to the discovery of other contraband items. Among them were 23 cartons of explosives used in mining, four drums containing 200 kilograms of cyanide, and two cartons with eight rolls of detonating wire. The police have since launched further investigations into the matter, with the anti-narcotics unit in Migori taking over the case.
Authorities have intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking in the region. The arrest in Isebania is part of an ongoing crackdown that has seen six suspects apprehended within the past week in different parts of the country.
On March 14, two suspects linked to the trafficking of cannabis were arrested in Juja town, Kiambu County. The operation, led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) enforcement unit, was conducted after weeks of intelligence gathering. The suspects were found in possession of bhang at a residential house in Juja.
A day earlier, three men suspected of drug trafficking were arrested in Mombasa. Law enforcement officers, acting on a tip-off, intercepted the suspects in Kaloleni as they allegedly transported a consignment of bhang to Bamburi.
The recent arrests highlight the government’s commitment to combating drug trafficking, with law enforcement agencies vowing to intensify their operations across the country.
