Kenya Railways has announced the return to its regular train schedule for the Kisumu Safari Train, marking the end of the additional trips that had been introduced to accommodate the festive season rush. This adjustment signals the conclusion of the enhanced service period, which sought to ease travel for Kenyans heading to Nyanza and Western regions.
In a statement, Kenya Railways confirmed that the Kisumu Safari Train will now operate on its standard schedule, with departures from Nairobi Central Station to Kisumu every Friday at 5:30 pm. The return journey will depart Kisumu Railway Station every Sunday at 6 pm.
The service expressed gratitude to its customers, saying, “We wish to inform our esteemed customers that the Kisumu Safari Train has reverted to the normal weekly schedule. The additional seasonal trips introduced for the festive period have now ceased. We thank you for choosing Kenya Railways and look forward to serving you.”
During the festive season, the railway service introduced additional trips to handle the increased travel demand that typically overwhelms Kenyan roads. The temporary schedule included departures from Nairobi Central Station on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 4 pm, starting from December 19, 2024. Return trips from Kisumu were scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays at 6:30 pm.
This move aimed to alleviate the notorious traffic congestion often experienced during holiday travel, especially for those heading to Nyanza and Western Kenya. By offering an alternative to road travel, Kenya Railways not only improved convenience but also promoted safety during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
The decision to revert to the normal schedule has been met with mixed reactions. While some travelers appreciated the convenience of the additional trips, others understand the operational constraints that come with maintaining such an expanded service throughout the year.
Frequent passengers, particularly those who rely on the train for its affordability and scenic views, have expressed hope that Kenya Railways might consider permanent service expansions in the future. The railway offers a unique travel experience, connecting Kenya’s bustling capital to the picturesque lakeside city of Kisumu, with stops in towns like Nakuru and Kericho that showcase Kenya’s diverse landscape.
The return to the normal schedule reflects Kenya Railways’ commitment to balancing customer needs with operational efficiency. While the festive season brought temporary changes, the railway service remains a vital link for Kenyans traveling between Nairobi and Kisumu.
As travel demand continues to grow, there is speculation about whether Kenya Railways might eventually expand its regular services to meet the needs of a dynamic and mobile population. For now, the streamlined schedule ensures that passengers can continue to rely on the Kisumu Safari Train for their weekend journeys.
In addition to easing road traffic during peak periods, Kenya Railways plays a crucial role in supporting regional economic activities. The train connects key towns along its route, fostering trade and tourism. Moreover, it provides a reliable and cost-effective mode of transport for those who might find road travel either too expensive or cumbersome.
As Kenya Railways moves forward, its ability to adapt to seasonal demands while maintaining efficient operations will likely be central to its long-term strategy. For travelers, the Kisumu Safari Train remains a symbol of Kenya’s enduring commitment to accessible and affordable transport.
