As Kenya prepares for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), significant efforts are underway to complete the renovations of two key stadiums: Moi International Sports Centre (Kasarani) and Nyayo National Stadium. The tournament, set to begin on February 1, 2025, will not only serve as a milestone for the country’s football scene but also play a crucial role in Kenya’s bid to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
The initial deadline for submitting the renovated stadia for inspection was set for December 31, 2024. However, an extension granted by CAF (Confederation of African Football) has pushed the submission date to January 20, 2025. This extension allows Kenya more time to ensure that the facilities meet the required standards for the tournament.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe has expressed confidence in Kenya’s readiness for the tournament, praising the progress made in the renovations. He commended President William Ruto for his dedication to the success of the event and emphasized the importance of the tournament in African football history. The 2024 CHAN is expected to be a landmark event, setting a high standard for future competitions.
Recent inspections by former Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and current Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya have revealed significant advancements in the renovation work at both stadiums. At Kasarani, the changing rooms are fully completed and ready for use, while the playing field is nearing completion, with final touches being applied to meet CAF’s stringent requirements. The canopy work around the stadium is also progressing, although the terraces are still under construction, with seating yet to be installed in some areas.
Nyayo National Stadium appears almost complete, with the final task being the installation of floodlights. The venue is expected to be ready in time for the tournament, with only minor adjustments remaining. In addition to the primary stadiums, targeted upgrades are being carried out at Kasarani Annex to support training sessions and auxiliary needs during CHAN.
The renovation of these stadiums is a significant undertaking, as they will not only host the CHAN but also play a pivotal role in Kenya’s future football ambitions. The completion of these projects will demonstrate the country’s ability to host major international events and further solidify its position as a key player in African football.
As the January 20th deadline approaches, there is a sense of urgency to complete the renovations and ensure that the stadia meet all CAF requirements. With the support of the government and local authorities, Kenya is working diligently to ensure that both Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadiums are ready to welcome teams and fans for the 2024 CHAN. The successful completion of these renovations will mark a significant achievement for Kenyan football and pave the way for future international tournaments in the country.
