Kenya Wheelchair Boxing Team Shines at World Paralympics, Securing Second Place

Kenya’s wheelchair boxing team has emerged as the second-best team at the World Paralympic boxing competition held in Poland. Under the capable leadership of Mary Atieno, the President of Kenya’s para boxing team, the athletes excelled in three categories, winning accolades and bringing pride to the nation.

Evans Odhiambo Absalom triumphed in the Heavyweight category, earning a gold medal with his outstanding performance. Similarly, Emmanuel Yakavi clinched gold in the Lightweight category, demonstrating the strength and prowess of Kenyan athletes on the international stage.

Atieno, speaking to the media, attributed the team’s success to the unwavering support from well-wishers. “We are happy that we were able to represent Kenya internationally and we emerged number two, winning gold in two categories,” she reiterated. The team’s achievements underscore the importance of community support in enabling athletes to reach their full potential.

Beyond their victories in the ring, the Kenyan team was also recognized for their exemplary conduct, receiving a trophy for being the most disciplined team at the competition. This accolade highlights the athletes’ commitment to sportsmanship and integrity, further enhancing their reputation on the global stage.

The journey to Poland was not without its challenges. In March, the team faced significant obstacles, but their spirits were lifted when former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko intervened. Responding to the athletes’ plea for assistance, Sonko generously covered the costs of their visas and competition uniforms. His support played a crucial role in enabling the team to participate in the World Paralympic boxing competition.

The success of the Kenyan wheelchair boxing team serves as an inspiration and a testament to the power of community and support in overcoming adversity. Their achievements in Poland have set a new benchmark for future competitions, showcasing the talent and resilience of Kenyan athletes.
