Kenyan Para Boxers Impress with Second-Place Finish in Poland Tournament

The Kenyan National Para Boxing team showcased their resilience and skill at the Seven Stars Para Boxing tournament in Warsaw, securing a commendable second-place finish behind hosts Poland. Led by Emmanuel Yakhama and Evans Odhiambo, the team’s performance highlighted their determination and adaptability on an international stage.

Evans Odhiambo, a standout in the heavyweight category, faced a tough challenge against local favorite Nikodem Prządka. Despite a closely contested bout that saw Odhiambo lose two rounds to one, his spirited effort underscored the competitive spirit of Kenyan para boxers.

Reflecting on the tournament, Odhiambo pointed out significant challenges encountered by the Kenyan team. “The first challenge we encountered here is that their wheelchairs are very different from the ones we use back home in Kenya,” he explained. This discrepancy highlights the logistical and equipment disparities that athletes must navigate in international competitions.

Odhiambo also expressed concerns about the judging criteria, suggesting a perceived bias towards the host nation. “These boxers don’t punch, they slap, and we can also say that the judges favored the hosts and lacked fairness,” he remarked. Such observations raise important questions about the fairness and transparency of officiating in para sports events, crucial for maintaining the integrity of competitive sportsmanship.

Despite these challenges, Kenya’s performance at the Seven Stars Para Boxing tournament serves as a testament to the dedication and talent within the country’s para boxing community. The team’s achievement not only highlights their competitive prowess but also underscores the need for continued support and investment in adaptive sports programs.
