Kenyan ICT students have once again showcased their prowess on the global stage, as six teams from the nation participated in and triumphed at the 8th Huawei ICT Competition Global Final in Shenzhen, China. Held from May 23-26, the event witnessed Kenya emerging as a standout performer, underscoring the burgeoning tech talent within the Sub-Saharan Africa region.
The remarkable achievement was punctuated by two network track teams from Kenya clinching the top spot globally. Kenya’s representation was not only substantial in quantity but also in quality, with a total of 16 teams showcasing their skills, resulting in a remarkable tally of accolades.
Among the honors bestowed upon Kenyan teams were the prestigious First Prize in the Network category for both Team 1 and Team 2, underscoring their exceptional competence in this field. Additionally, Kenya secured the Second Prize in the Computing category with Team 1, and multiple Third Prizes, including in the Cloud and Computing categories with Team 1 and Team 2 respectively. Notably, the Women in Tech Award was also bestowed upon Kenya’s Cloud Team 2, highlighting the nation’s commitment to fostering gender inclusivity in the tech sector.
Reflecting on the global final, Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria, the Principal Secretary (PS) of the State Department for TVET, emphasized the significance of international competitions in nurturing talent and fostering a spirit of global competitiveness. Dr. Muoria noted that while local competitions provide valuable opportunities for growth, international platforms such as the Huawei ICT Competition allow students to benchmark their skills against peers from around the world, thereby motivating them to strive for excellence on a global scale.
The magnitude of the Huawei ICT Competition cannot be understated, as evidenced by its overwhelming participation numbers. With over 170,000 students hailing from more than 2,000 institutions across 80 countries and regions, the competition stands as a testament to Huawei’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of ICT talent on a global scale.
Moreover, the diversity of participants at the global final, comprising over 160 teams from 49 countries and regions, underscores the competition’s role in fostering cross-cultural collaboration and knowledge exchange. By bringing together some of the brightest minds in ICT from diverse backgrounds, the Huawei ICT Competition serves as a melting pot of innovation and creativity, enriching the global tech ecosystem.
