As the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) games approach, excitement is building around the 3×3 basketball tournament in Mbale, Uganda. Kenyan teams are gearing up for a fierce battle against Uganda’s Budo Secondary School, the reigning champions of both the 3×3 and 5×5 basketball tournaments from last year’s event in Huye, Rwanda. This year, Kenya’s schools are determined to break Budo’s winning streak and claim top honors in the regional competition.
The regional showpiece, scheduled to kick off on Sunday, will see a strong Kenyan contingent competing in both the boys’ and girls’ categories. In the boys’ category, St Joseph’s Kitale (JOBO), Onjiko School, and Friends School, Kamusinga will represent Kenya. Meanwhile, St Joseph’s Girls Kitale, Butere Girls, and Nasokol will compete in the girls’ category.
Kenyan Teams’ Determination and Preparation
Kenya’s teams are coming into the tournament with high hopes and rigorous preparations. St Joseph’s Girls Kitale coach, Patrice Kisaka, has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to challenge the Ugandans. Kisaka emphasized the hard work put in during their one-week training camp at Mukumu Girls, aimed at addressing mistakes made during the national championships in Kisii School. “We have what it takes to compete with the Ugandans. It will be war, and we want to use the training camp to rectify our mistakes,” Kisaka stated. He is particularly hopeful that Gai Nyayual, who was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the nationals, will lead his team to victory.
In the girls’ category, Butere Girls are setting their sights on improving upon their third-place finish from last year. Coach Vincent Omondi is optimistic about his team’s chances. “We want to lift the title. That’s our target because last year, we finished third. The competition at the regionals is always stiff, but I’m confident our 3×3 and 5×5 teams will perform well,” Omondi said. His commitment to climbing the podium reflects the competitive spirit driving the Kenyan teams.
Nasokol’s coach, Mark Kewasis, is also enthusiastic about the upcoming competition. Despite it being their first time participating in Uganda, Kewasis is targeting a top-three finish. “My target is a top-three finish. We’re excited to experience the competition and bring our best game,” Kewasis remarked.
Boys’ Team: Aiming for Glory
On the boys’ side, St Joseph’s Kitale, popularly known as JOBO, is particularly motivated for their debut at the regional event. Coach Herman Masafu is determined to make a strong impression. “We want to bring glory to Kenya. We are not afraid of the Ugandans, Rwandese, or any other team because we are the champions here in Kenya,” Masafu declared. His bold statement reflects the team’s readiness and confidence as they prepare to take on formidable opponents.
Looking Ahead
As the FEASSSA games approach, the anticipation and excitement are palpable. The Kenyan teams are well-prepared and eager to challenge the dominance of Budo Secondary School. With strong preparations, dedicated coaching, and a fierce competitive spirit, Kenya’s representatives are ready to make their mark on the regional stage. The games in Mbale promise to be a thrilling showcase of talent and determination, as Kenya seeks to dethrone Uganda’s reigning champions and claim victory in the 3×3 basketball tournament.
The regional showdown will not only highlight the skill and dedication of young athletes but also foster regional sportsmanship and camaraderie. Fans and supporters are eagerly awaiting to see which team will emerge victorious and take home the coveted titles.
