Kenya’s Acting Inspector General Issues Warning Ahead of Planned Protests

The Acting Inspector General of Police in Kenya, Douglas Kanja, has issued a stern warning ahead of scheduled protests on Tuesday, expressing significant concerns over potential disruptions by criminal elements aiming to exploit the situation for nefarious purposes. In a statement released early Tuesday morning, Kanja referenced intelligence reports indicating organized criminal groups might infiltrate the planned peaceful demonstrations, posing a direct threat to the safety and security of both protesters and the general public.

“We have received credible intelligence indicating that certain organized criminal groups have planned to infiltrate, disrupt and destabilize the peaceful nature of the demonstrations,” Kanja stated, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the potential consequences of such actions. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and order during protests, urging demonstrators to cooperate closely with law enforcement authorities to ensure their safety and uphold national security.

“While exercising your democratic rights to demonstrate, we urge you to remain peaceful and vigilant,” Kanja urged, highlighting the critical role of collaboration between protesters and the police to prevent any incidents of violence or criminal behavior. He reiterated the police force’s commitment to respecting citizens’ constitutional rights while simultaneously enforcing laws that safeguard public safety and prevent disruptions to normal societal functions.

The Acting IG acknowledged previous instances where protests had turned violent, resulting in loss of life, injuries, property damage, and disruption to businesses and daily life for many Kenyans. He expressed a collective responsibility to prevent a recurrence of such incidents, stressing the need for all stakeholders to prioritize peace and stability during this sensitive period.

“In the recent past, unfortunately, we have witnessed tragic loss of lives, injuries, violence, criminal conduct, and destruction of property during similar protests,” Kanja lamented, urging citizens to exercise restraint and caution while expressing their grievances. He assured the public that law enforcement agencies were prepared and proactive in their approach to maintaining law and order, with measures in place to mitigate any potential risks associated with the protests.

The statement comes amidst heightened tensions and public anticipation surrounding the planned demonstrations, highlighting the delicate balance between exercising civil liberties and preserving public security. As Kenya braces for the protests, stakeholders across the nation are closely monitoring developments and preparing to respond effectively to any challenges that may arise.

Kanja’s message serves as a firm reminder of the responsibilities shared by all parties involved in the protests, emphasizing the necessity of peaceful engagement and constructive dialogue in addressing societal concerns. The police, he assured, are committed to facilitating lawful demonstrations while ensuring the safety and security of all Kenyans.

As the nation prepares for the day’s events, the Acting IG’s statement underscores the importance of vigilance and cooperation in safeguarding public order and preventing criminal elements from hijacking legitimate expressions of civic activism. Kenyans are urged to remain vigilant, exercise restraint, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to uphold peace and ensure a safe environment for all.
