Kenya’s Paralympic Team Ready to Shine in Paris 2024

Team Kenya for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, scheduled from August 28 to September 8, is gearing up to showcase their talent and resilience on the international stage. Featuring 14 athletes across five disciplines, the team is a testament to Kenya’s growing prowess in para-sports.

A Diverse Team Across Multiple Disciplines

Kenya’s representation will span athletics, taekwondo, rowing, cycling, and powerlifting. Recent additions to the team include Bedan Ireri in cycling and Hellen Wawira in powerlifting. Ireri’s journey from street life to winning four gold medals at the Africa Para-cycling Championships in Cairo is nothing short of inspirational. His victories in both time-trial and road racing events secured his place in the Paralympics.

“Ireri’s achievements are truly inspiring. From the streets to the international stage, his story is a beacon of hope,” said Ronald Milare of the Kenya National Paralympic Committee (KNPC).

Hellen Wawira, ranked seventh globally in powerlifting, earned her spot in Paris through consistent performances at the World Powerlifting Championships in Georgia.

“Mushai’s commitment over the years is unparalleled. His experience will be invaluable in Paris,” Milare noted.

Additional slots were awarded by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to Samson Ojuka and Sheila Wanyonyi, following their impressive performances at the World Para-Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan.

New Talents and Expanding Disciplines

Kenya’s Paralympic team also includes debutants Stacy Neema and Julieta Moipo in taekwondo, and Asiya Sururu in rowing. These new talents exemplify the expanding talent pool and the broadening scope of Kenya’s participation in the Paralympic Games.
