The first batch of the fourth contingent of the Kenya Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 4) has been officially flagged off for a critical mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The ceremony took place at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and was presided over by Brigadier Stephen Kapkory, Base Commander of Embakasi Air Base.
KENQRF 4 is set to join the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). This mission is vital for stabilizing the eastern regions of the DRC, where persistent armed group activity has led to ongoing instability. The deployment comes at a pivotal time, as MONUSCO ramps up efforts to protect civilians, implement Security Sector Reform, and support the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) of former combatants.
Brigadier Kapkory, in his address, underscored the readiness and professionalism of the troops. He expressed confidence in their ability to perform effectively, highlighting their extensive training and clear understanding of the mission’s objectives. “I am confident in your level of training and professionalism,” Brigadier Kapkory remarked. “Be good ambassadors of the Republic of Kenya by maintaining a high sense of professionalism and discipline in all your undertakings and uphold the exemplary performance registered by your predecessors.”
The KENQRF 4 contingent will engage in various operations including combating armed groups, protecting civilians, supporting humanitarian efforts, and aiding in the DDR process. Their mission follows the successful performance of previous contingents, who have made significant contributions to stabilizing the region.
Lieutenant Colonel Simon Seda, Commander of KENQRF 4, also expressed optimism about his troops’ preparedness. “Our men and women are prepared for the task ahead,” Colonel Seda stated. “They have undergone rigorous training and are equipped with the necessary skills to execute this mission effectively. We are committed to contributing to the restoration of peace and stability in the DRC.”
In a related event, Brigadier Kapkory welcomed home the first batch of KENQRF 3 troops returning from the DRC. He praised their exceptional efforts in stabilizing the eastern DRC and commended their adherence to the highest standards of discipline and professionalism. Their success in fulfilling their mandate and upholding the UN code of conduct highlighted Kenya’s reputation in peacekeeping missions.
Kenya’s involvement in UN peacekeeping missions dates back to its independence in 1963. Over the decades, the country has established a distinguished track record for professionalism and effective execution in various peacekeeping roles. This ongoing commitment to regional and global peace and security underscores Kenya’s role as a key player in international peacekeeping efforts.
The deployment of KENQRF 4 to the DRC reaffirms Kenya’s dedication to contributing to global peace and stability. As the contingent embarks on this crucial mission, their efforts will be closely watched, and their success will further enhance Kenya’s standing in the international peacekeeping community.
