Kericho County is reeling after an alarming case of suspected food poisoning at Kalyet Secondary School in Kipkelion. On Monday morning, 60 students were rushed to Londiani Sub-County Hospital after complaining of severe stomachaches, diarrhea, and vomiting.
Hospital superintendent Dr. Collins Kipkoech confirmed the incident, stating that the symptoms strongly suggested food poisoning. Preliminary reports revealed that the students had consumed githeri (a traditional Kenyan dish of maize and beans), which is suspected to have been contaminated.
“The students presented with typical symptoms of food poisoning—vomiting and diarrhea,” Dr. Kipkoech explained. “Fortunately, most of them have been stabilized and are responding well to treatment. While some are likely to be discharged soon, a few will remain under observation to ensure full recovery.”
The hospital has implemented measures to manage the influx of patients effectively, mobilizing staff and resources to provide timely medical attention. Dr. Kipkoech praised the prompt response by the school and local authorities, which ensured the students received swift medical care.
As investigations begin into the source of contamination, concerns are mounting about the school’s food preparation standards and hygiene protocols. However, the school management has yet to issue a statement on the matter.
The incident highlights the persistent challenges of ensuring food safety in schools across the country. While schools are tasked with providing nutritious meals for students, lapses in hygiene or quality control can have dire consequences.
Parents of the affected students expressed their anxiety and frustration, calling for accountability and stringent measures to prevent a recurrence. “We send our children to school to learn, not to fall sick because of unsafe food,” lamented one parent at the hospital.
Public health officials have been called in to investigate the case thoroughly. Samples of the githeri served to the students are being analyzed to determine the exact cause of the contamination. Depending on the findings, the relevant authorities are expected to take corrective actions to ensure food safety standards are upheld in the school.
This incident serves as a wake-up call to educational institutions nationwide to prioritize food safety. Schools must adopt stringent measures in their kitchens, including routine inspections and proper food storage, to protect the health and well-being of their students.
As the students continue their recovery, parents, school administrators, and health officials remain vigilant to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
