Kick It Out has demanded clarity from FIFA president Gianni Infantino regarding the actions being taken in response to a video that surfaced in July 2024. The video, which was shared by Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández, shows him and several of his Argentina teammates chanting a derogatory song about French players of African descent after their Copa América victory. The footage sparked controversy and led to a formal complaint from the French Football Federation.
FIFA responded at the time, stating that the incident was under review, but there has been little to no public follow-up since then. Kick It Out, the UK-based anti-discrimination organization, is now seeking answers about whether an investigation has taken place and what actions, if any, FIFA and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) are taking. Samuel Okafor, the chief executive of Kick It Out, expressed concern over the lack of transparency in handling the matter.
The video, filmed on the team coach, shows several Argentina players engaging in what is widely seen as racist and transphobic behavior. Although Fernández was one of the most prominent figures in the footage, many other players can be heard singing along. Following the incident, Fernández personally apologized to his Chelsea teammates during the club’s pre-season tour in the United States. Chelsea FC, after taking into account his apology and a charitable donation made by the player to an anti-discrimination organization, decided not to impose any further sanctions on Fernández.
However, Kick It Out has raised questions about the response from FIFA and CONMEBOL. Okafor’s letter to Infantino emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability, pointing out that these organizations should be able to establish the facts and reach an outcome without significant delay. He also expressed concern over the apparent lack of communication from FIFA and CONMEBOL regarding the investigation’s progress.
The incident, which garnered significant media attention, has raised broader questions about how football authorities handle allegations of racism and discrimination. Okafor’s letter, which was also sent to Alejandro Domínguez, the president of CONMEBOL, highlights the need for a clear and public response to such incidents, particularly when they involve high-profile players and are seen by a wide audience.
Kick It Out’s call for clarity comes at a time when football organizations are under increasing pressure to take stronger stances against racism and discrimination. Despite the public outcry, it remains unclear what steps, if any, FIFA and CONMEBOL are taking to address the issue. Without a transparent investigation and clear outcome, concerns about the effectiveness of football’s anti-discrimination policies will likely persist.
As of now, neither FIFA, CONMEBOL, nor Kick It Out has provided any additional comment on the matter. The lack of a public resolution or official statement from the governing bodies raises questions about the commitment of football authorities to combat racism and discrimination within the sport. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for how similar incidents are handled in the future, as well as for the broader efforts to create a more inclusive and respectful environment in football.
