Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced that National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah will serve as the chief agent for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in the upcoming African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship elections. The polls are scheduled for February 25, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Kindiki revealed that Ichung’wah would travel to Ethiopia at least a week before the election and remain there until the results are announced and Raila, should he win, is sworn in. “I was President William Ruto’s chief agent for seven days at Bomas. Raila Odinga’s chief agent in Addis Ababa will be the Leader of Majority Kimani Ichung’wah,” Kindiki said during a meeting with Kajiado County leaders on Friday.
Kindiki emphasized the importance of political unity in Kenya, noting that the collaborative efforts of President William Ruto and Raila Odinga have positioned the country to lead the African Union. He highlighted that their decision to move beyond divisive politics and work together had opened a historic opportunity for Kenya.
“If Ruto and PM Raila had continued with divisive politics, Kenya would not have had this chance. We will do everything possible to ensure Raila Odinga’s victory. President Ruto is fully supporting him, and we are leaving nothing to chance,” Kindiki affirmed.
Raila faces stiff competition for the AUC chairmanship from Djibouti’s Mohamoud Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato. To secure the position, a candidate must garner support from at least 33 of the 55 African Union member states.
Raila’s campaign has gained momentum in recent weeks, with the veteran leader targeting the influential North Africa voting bloc. On Wednesday, he was in Algeria, while Thursday saw him meeting leaders in Tunisia. His diplomatic charm offensive seeks to consolidate support ahead of the highly anticipated election.
The Kenyan government has pledged unwavering support for Raila’s candidacy, highlighting the potential benefits of securing the AUC chairmanship. “We are praying for Raila Odinga and working hard. This is not just about Raila; it’s about Kenya leading Africa to new heights,” Kindiki added.
As the countdown to February 25 continues, Raila’s campaign team is intensifying its efforts, with Kenya determined to make history by taking a leadership role in shaping the continent’s future through the African Union.
