Professor Abraham Kithure Kindiki was sworn in as Kenya’s third Deputy President, earning a nickname, “Abra-Kay,” from President William Ruto. His journey to this pinnacle was marked by resilience, legal brilliance, and a steadfast commitment to service.
Kindiki hails from Tharaka Nithi County, a small but vibrant community. His rise to national prominence, underscored by the declaration of “Kindiki Day” as a public holiday, is a testament to his exceptional journey. Born with modest beginnings, Kindiki’s intellectual acumen was evident early on. He earned his PhD in Law by the age of 30, demonstrating the discipline that would define his career.
In 2005, as a young lecturer at Moi University, Kindiki emerged as a thought leader while consulting for a project advancing the rights of persons with disabilities. Alongside global legal experts like Prof. Marcia Rioux and Tanzania’s Dr. Elly Macha, he navigated the integration of international customary laws into Kenya’s municipal framework. His work contributed to the implementation of the Persons with Disabilities Act (2003).
As his profile grew, Kindiki became a sought-after political and legal analyst on national television. His sharp intellect and command of constitutional law earned him a spot on President Ruto’s International Criminal Court (ICC) defense team, a case that cemented his reputation as a legal strategist.
In 2013, Kindiki was elected the first senator of Tharaka Nithi County. His election to Senate leadership as Majority Leader underscored his growing influence. However, his ambition for the presidency sparked internal contestation in the Meru region, though he garnered support from local elders and professionals.
As Deputy Speaker in the 12th Parliament, Kindiki impressed many with his oratory skills and impartial rulings. He was admired for ensuring inclusive debates, especially amplifying voices of women, youth, and marginalized groups. However, his loyalty to then-Deputy President Ruto during a political fallout with President Uhuru Kenyatta led to his ouster. Despite his innocence and no formal charges, he chose to stand firm on principle, a decision that resonated with many of his peers.
In May 2022, Kindiki was among the top contenders for the running mate position for Ruto’s presidential bid. After intense deliberations, Rigathi Gachagua was selected, despite Kindiki receiving the majority vote among electors. Despite this setback, Kindiki remained pivotal to Ruto’s campaign, serving as the chief presidential agent. His role was instrumental in coordinating election agents and overseeing vote protection during the August 2022 general elections.
Following Ruto’s victory, Kindiki was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Interior, where his performance further solidified his reputation as an effective leader. His elevation to Deputy President two years later is a testament to his unwavering commitment to the nation and his ability to navigate Kenya’s complex political landscape.
Kindiki’s story is one of patience, resilience, and purpose. From a law lecturer advocating for marginalized groups to becoming Kenya’s second-highest-ranking official, his journey exemplifies the fulfillment of a vision pursued with determination.
As he assumes his role, Kindiki carries the hopes of a nation and the weight of responsibility. His legal acumen and dedication to service position him uniquely to contribute to Kenya’s development. His rise embodies the biblical promise in Habakkuk 2:3: “For the vision is yet for an appointed time; at the end, it will speak, and not lie.”
We wish Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki success as he continues to serve Kenya and humanity.
