The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Bungoma East Chapter has called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to cease the ongoing unnecessary transfer of teachers, citing significant disruptions to the education system in the region.
Alex Wafula, the chairman of KNUT Bungoma East Chapter and the head teacher of Kituni High School, voiced his concerns over the impact of these transfers on the smooth learning process for pupils. Wafula emphasized that the frequent movement of teachers is detrimental to the stability and continuity of the students’ education.
“These transfers are not only disruptive but also unnecessary,” Wafula stated. “Many schools in Bungoma East have been severely affected, and the constant change of teachers is hindering the academic progress of our students.”
Wafula pointed out that the ongoing transfers have led to a lack of consistency in teaching, which is crucial for maintaining the quality of education. He argued that students need a stable learning environment with familiar teachers who understand their academic needs and can provide continuous support.
Furthermore, Wafula highlighted that the transfers have caused distress among teachers, affecting their morale and ability to perform effectively. He called on the TSC to consider the well-being of both students and teachers and to prioritize stability in the education system.
The KNUT Bungoma East Chapter’s plea comes at a time when the education sector in Kenya is facing numerous challenges, including teacher shortages and resource constraints. Wafula urged the TSC to engage in meaningful dialogue with teachers and other stakeholders to address these issues collaboratively.
