The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Kisumu branch, has petitioned the government to urgently address the demands of Generation Z in order to end the ongoing protests and restore normalcy in the education sector. As schools across the country have resumed amidst heavy demonstrations, the academic calendar is facing significant disruptions due to the actions led by youthful Kenyans.
In a press briefing, David Obuon, the Executive Secretary of the KNUT Kisumu branch, emphasized the critical situation faced by students, particularly those in urban areas who rely heavily on public transport. “With the disruption in public transport, accessing schools will be a challenge for learners,” Obuon stated. He further elaborated on the difficulties that stranded students are experiencing, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.
The protests, driven by the younger generation’s grievances, have seen massive turnouts, causing major disruptions in daily activities, including education. The demands of the Gen Z protesters range from economic reforms to improved governance and greater inclusivity in decision-making processes. These protests have resulted in widespread transportation issues, making it difficult for students to commute to their schools.
Teachers and parents are growing increasingly concerned about the impact of these disruptions on students’ education. Many schools, especially those located in urban areas, are witnessing low attendance as students are unable to reach their institutions safely. The academic calendar, already strained by past disruptions, is now at risk of further delays, potentially affecting the performance and future prospects of thousands of learners.
Obuon called on the government to engage with the protesting youths and find a peaceful and swift resolution to their grievances. “It is crucial for the government to understand the root causes of these protests and address them promptly. Our students’ education and future depend on the stability and normalcy of the academic environment,” he said.
The KNUT Kisumu branch has also appealed to the community and other stakeholders to support the call for a peaceful resolution. The union is advocating for dialogue and collaboration between the government and the youth to ensure that the protests do not continue to disrupt the education sector.
As the situation unfolds, the education sector remains on edge, with hopes pinned on a swift resolution to the protests. The KNUT and other educational stakeholders are committed to working towards restoring normalcy and ensuring that students can resume their studies without further hindrance.
