Kenya Police Bullets’ tactician, Beldine Odemba, is jubilant following the Football Kenya Federation’s (FKF) groundbreaking decision to incorporate the Kenya Women’s Premier League (KWPL) in their annual football awards for the first time. This monumental move is poised to propel women’s football in Kenya to unprecedented heights.
A New Dawn for Women’s Football
Odemba believes that recognizing KWPL players and coaches in the annual awards is not just a celebratory gesture but a significant step towards elevating the women’s game. “The rewards to KWPL players and coaches are a great motivation and will no doubt change the game,” she remarked. The inclusion in the awards is expected to provide much-needed publicity and attract a consistent fan base, which has been a long-standing challenge for women’s football in Kenya.
As the teams gear up for the 2024/2025 season, Odemba calls upon Kenyans to rally behind the girls’ teams, offering them the support they deserve. “As we prepare for the new season, we urge Kenyans to support our girls’ teams and hear them out as well,” she emphasized.
Challenges and Opportunities
The previous KWPL season started with 12 teams but concluded with 10, following the relegation of Trans Nzoia Falcons and Gaspo Ladies due to financial difficulties. Odemba highlighted the need for sponsors to step in and support the women’s league, ensuring its sustainability and growth. The financial stability of teams is crucial for maintaining the competitive spirit and overall development of the league.
Celebrating Excellence
Odemba herself was a standout at the FKF Awards, clinching the Coach of the Year award. Her exemplary leadership guided Kenya Police Bullets to an unbeaten season, ultimately securing the 2023/2024 KWPL title. This achievement not only underscores her tactical prowess but also sets a benchmark for other coaches in the league.
The awards ceremony was a night of triumph for many. Tumaini Waliaula of Vihiga Queens was honored with the Golden Boot, having emerged as the top scorer. Vihiga Queens also bagged the Fair Play and Best Team on Social Media awards, reflecting their excellence both on and off the pitch. Despite not retaining the trophy, Vihiga Queens’ coach, Boniface Nyamunyamu, expressed pride in their accomplishments. “We had the best keeper despite sharing the award with Ulinzi Starlets. We also won the top scorer’s award and emerged as the best team in the league and on social media,” Nyamunyamu noted.
Recognizing Talent and Dedication
The awards highlighted the incredible talent and dedication within KWPL. Sophy Akinyi of Vihiga Queens and Judith Osimbo of Ulinzi Starlets were both recognized as the best goalkeepers of the season, a testament to their outstanding performances. Police Bullets’ Lydia Akoth was named Female Player of the Year, while Josephine Wanjiku received the Best Referee of the Year award, acknowledging her impeccable officiating standards.
Additionally, Mildred Cheche was honored with the FKF President’s Award for her remarkable leadership of the Junior Harambee Starlets to the World Cup. This accolade underscores the importance of nurturing young talent and providing them with opportunities to shine on the global stage.
The Road Ahead
The inclusion of KWPL in the annual awards is a significant milestone for women’s football in Kenya. It not only recognizes the hard work and dedication of players, coaches, and officials but also brings much-needed attention to the women’s game. As the new season approaches, the call for support from fans and sponsors becomes even more crucial.
Beldine Odemba’s optimism and the collective achievements celebrated at the FKF Awards set a promising tone for the future of KWPL. With continued support and investment, women’s football in Kenya is poised for a bright and successful journey ahead.
